For improving the performance of wire-EDM, the prevention of electrode from breaking is considered to be one of the most important ploblems. Once the breaking of electrode occurs, it inflicts a serious damage on the machining process of wire-EDM. To provide for the worst, it is usually impelled to feed workpiece at low rate. After studying of these problems experimentally, this paper points out a number of reasons why electrode gets broken, and develops a new control method to prevent electrode from breaking by means of monitoring the pulse frequency. The effect of this control is evaluated under various machining conditions.
