Summary

For improving the performance of wire-EDM, the prevention of electrode from breaking is considered to be one of the most important ploblems. Once the breaking of electrode occurs, it inflicts a serious damage on the machining process of wire-EDM. To provide for the worst, it is usually impelled to feed workpiece at low rate. Therefore it is very important to know:

how the premonitory symptom of electrode-breaking can be detected,

how long this symptom continues, or in other words,

(3)

how much time is permitted to deal with it.

After studying of these problems experimentally, this paper points out a number of reasons why electrode gets broken, and develops a new control method to prevent electrode from breaking by means of monitoring the pulse frequency. The effect of this control is evaluated under various machining conditions.
